Different types of allium
Alliums are a wonderful addition to any garden, whether planted alone or in groups, as they attract bees and butterflies. At BULBi.co.uk, you can find a variety of allium bulbs, including the large-flowered Gladiator, Globemaster, and Purple Sensation, as well as small-flowered varieties like moly luteum, sphaerochephalon, and oreophilum, which are perfect for naturalizing.
The large-flowered allium bulbs are real showstoppers, attracting not only bees and butterflies but also adding a touch of drama to your garden. These bulbs are great for combining with perennials, and their flowers make for stunning cut arrangements. With their honey-like fragrance, these blooms are a real treat for the senses.
Small-flowered allium bulbs, on the other hand, are perfect for adding rich blooms to your garden with minimal maintenance. These bulbs come back annually and multiply quickly, making them an easy and rewarding addition to your outdoor space. Purple, blue, pink, and white alliums are available, and our filter feature allows you to easily choose your preferred flowering period, colour, group, or height.
Whether you opt for the large-flowered or small-flowered varieties, allium bulbs are sure to bring colour, beauty, and beneficial pollinators to your garden.
How to plant allium bulbs
allium bloom late spring, beginning of summer and the bulbs can be planted in the fall, before the first frost kicks in. The allium bulbs need a cold period in the soil to bloom. Planting allium bulbs is easy and straightforward. Simply choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, dig a hole that's about 3 times the height of the bulb, and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing upwards. Cover the bulb with soil, water it well, and wait for it to bloom in the spring.
History of the allium
Allium means "garlic" in Latin. There are also sources that say Allium comes from the Greek word 'aleo' which means avoidance (due to the smell of garlic). Linneaus first described Allium in 1753. The genus Allium includes nearly 1,000 species. This includes species that are edible, such as onion, shallot, chives and leeks. Depending on the species, the bulbs are 3 to 30 centimeters in size. The Allium oreophilum grows to only 5 centimeters in height, while the Allium giganteum can reach over a meter in height. Most species bloom in early summer, right after many spring bloomers. Originally, the allium comes from the Northern Hemisphere, Asia and the Middle East
