Different types of crocus
Crocus bulbs come in two vareties: the small-flowered/botanical crocus and the large-flowered crocus. The small-flowered varieties are known for their early and lavish flowering, boasting a wide range of beautiful colours. They look stunning when planted in small groups per species or in mixtures, and pair exceptionally well with snowdrops, winter aconite, and chionodoxa. The most commonly planted small-flowered crocuses are the backyard crocuses (tommasinianus) and snow crocuses (chrysanthus).
Large-flowered crocuses bloom intensely in March and April, often at the same time as the first early tulips and muscari. For the best effect, plant them in large groups en masse by species or in mixtures. These crocuses are great for naturalizing and will return year after year. Some of the most popular varieties include Jeanne d'Arc (white), Golden Yellow, and Flower Record (purple).
While there are several autumn-blooming crocus varieties, the one that has captured the imagination of many for centuries is the crocus sativus, also known as the true saffron crocus. The red stems of this particular crocus is harvested and dried to produce the precious saffron spice.
To choose the right crocus variety for your garden, you can use the filter feature to narrow down options by factors such as flowering period, colour, group, or height. Whether you prefer small or large-flowered crocuses, or even the coveted saffron crocus, there is a perfect variety out there to add beauty and value to your garden.
Planting crocus bulbs
Crocus bloom in spring and the bulbs can be planted in the fall, before the first frost kicks in. The crocus bulbs need a cold period in the soil to bloom. Planting crocus bulbs is easy and straightforward. Simply choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, dig a hole that's about 3 times the height of the bulb, and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing upwards. Cover the bulb with soil, water it well, and wait for it to bloom in the spring.
History of the crocus
There are at least 120 different varieties of crocuses, of which about 30 are cultivated. In 1597, 11 species were described in the book 'General History of Plants gathered by John Gerard'. It is mainly native to the Balkans and Asia Minor; a few species occur in Central Europe and Central Asia. Crocus is Greek and Arabic for saffron, a reference to the Crocus sativus from which the herb saffron is obtained. The crocus has been cultivated as an ornamental plant in the Netherlands since 1550. The legend goes that Krokus, a beautiful young man from Arcadia, while throwing a discus with his Olympic friend, the god Hermes, was fatally hit by such a stone disc and that on the places where his blood fell down, purple flowers appeared: crocuses.
