History of the gladiolus

Gladiolus is a genus of perennials in the lily family (Iridaceae). The plants are also known as sword lilies. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, strikingly large gladiolus plants were discovered growing in the wild in South Africa. These were crossed and, especially from the Netherlands, more and more varieties came onto the market, varying in size from 50 to 170 centimetres. Smaller varieties such as Gladiolus nanus also appeared. In South Africa, gladioli were used by the population as food and mixed in with biological medicines. Cultivation in the Netherlands began in 1600, but the gladiolus was already known in Roman times. The name 'gladiolus' is derived from the Latin 'gladius', which means sword. The ancient Romans engaged in glorious gladiatorial battles. It was literally a matter of death or gladioli: whoever defeated the other was buried under gladioli. The term "death or gladioli" has therefore become intertwined with the Nijmegen Marches. During the Nijmegen Marches, the Sint Annastraat, the last stretch of the marches, is transformed into a 'Via Gladiola' and the walkers who cross the finish line are greeted with brightly coloured gladioli.
