Planting peony rootstocks

Peonies love moist and nutrient-rich soil and a place in full sun. Do not plant the rhizomes of the peony too deep, because that can cause the plant to flower badly. The nose of the plant only needs to be 1-2 centimetres under the soil. Peonies can be planted in autumn or in spring, because peonies are winter hardy. Please note that peonies do not produce many flowers in the first year. The rootstocks in size 3/5 generally produce flowers faster than size 2/3. If they are planted in the autumn, the rhizomes have more time to make roots and the plant will give more flowers. The second year they give good flowers. After 6 to 10 years the peony plants can be thrown up. You can then split the plants and replant them in another place.

Different kinds of peonies

We offer a wide range of rhizomes in different sizes. There are many paeonia varieties, mostly red, white or pink in colour, almost all of them belonging to the paeonia Lactiflora group. Such as the paeonia 'Duchesse de Nemours' or paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt'. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example flowering period, colour, group or height.

History of the paeonia

Paeonia is a genus of the family Paeoniaceae. The botanical name Paeonia goes back to antiquity. Paieon was the god of healing in ancient Greece. Peonies were originally grown to be used as medicine. The roots of this 'herb' were used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat many different ailments.
