Different types of daffodils

We offer a range of daffodil bulbs, including large-flowered, small-flowered, botanical and multi-flowered varieties. Each type has its own unique characteristics, from the classic yellow trumpet daffodil to the delicate white petal daffodils.

Daffodils are not only a beautiful and popular spring flower, but they also have the unique ability to naturalize. This means that once planted, daffodils will come back year after year, multiplying and spreading over time.

Daffodils are able to naturalize because they have a self-propagating bulb. This means that each year, the bulb will divide and produce new bulbs, which will in turn produce new flowers. Over time, this will create a cluster of daffodils in the same area, giving the appearance of a naturalized meadow or garden.

One of the benefits of daffodils' naturalizing characteristic is that they require very little maintenance once established. Another advantage of daffodils' naturalizing ability is that they can be used to create a natural-looking landscape. By planting daffodils in clusters or drifts, they will give the appearance of a wildflower meadow or a naturalized garden.

Planting daffodil bulbs

Daffodils bloom in spring and the bulbs can be planted in the fall, before the first frost kicks in. The daffodil bulbs need a cold period in the soil to bloom. Planting daffodil bulbs is easy and straightforward. Simply choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, dig a hole that's about 3 times the height of the bulb, and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing upwards. Cover the bulb with soil, water it well, and wait for it to bloom in the spring.

History of the daffodil and narcissus

As with the hyacinth, the name of the daffodil also stems from Greek mythology. Narcissus, the son of a nymph, was a very handsome young man who, by the sight of his own reflection in a small lake, fell so much in love with himself that he could not tear himself away from gazing for hours at this unattainable beauty and slowly withered away. Finally, the vengeance goddess Nemesis turned him into a narcissus. The forward head of the daffodil resembles the forward head of Narcissus. Therefore, the narcissus represents vanity and selfishness. The first daffodil Narcissus tazetta was first brought to the Netherlands from France in 1561. Although the origin of the daffodil's name is not positive, daffodils do carry positive meaning. The daffodil is naturally associated with spring and therefore symbolizes a new beginning.
