History of Ranunculus

Ranunculus originates from Central Asia, where it eventually found its way to Europe. Ranunculus is derived from the Latin word for frog, 'rana', because Ranunculus grows wild in marshy areas. Louis IX brought them from the sixth crusade in the Orient, but these tubers were lost. In the time of Queen Elizabeth I, they were brought from Turkey to England, where they did not initially cause a stir. Clusius and de l' Lobel saw them on a painting by Lambertus Vos, which they had received from Charles Rijn van Eeckebeeke, ambassador to the court of the Turkish sultan Selim II. They included a picture in their herb books. Clusius took the claw-shaped tubers of the Turkish ranunculus with him to Flanders. Parkinson mentioned them in his "Paradisus" in 1629. He called the double red form Asia. Clusius' Ranunculus was stolen from him, proof that it was already worth stealing flowers in those days. The Turkish Ranunculus flowered earlier, was a firmer plant and had larger flowers. However, the Persian ranunculus was more popular due to its large colour range. Ranunculus spread throughout Europe through the exchange of batches between ambassadors. Ranunculus was also popular in the Netherlands and a Ranunculus mania broke out in England in the 18th century. Thousands of varieties were cultivated. In 1792, English firms offered 800 different varieties, but by 1820 these had dwindled to 400. During this period, Ranunculus was only less popular than the hyacinth in Haarlem. The original species (Ranunculus asiaticus) was a simple plant with single, saucer-shaped flowers. Today's Ranunculus is the result of crosses and selections by growers and breeders.
